Go Biology! Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society awarded five LMU Seaver students research foundation grants this year:

-Alyssa Rodriguez, a junior biology major and a member of the Vasquez Lab, was awarded a grant for the project, "Metabolic Performance of the Mussel Mytilus Galloprovincialis Exposed to CO2 Filtered Water via Captura Electrodialysis"

-Lainee Irribarren, a junior biology major and a member of the Vasquez Lab, was awarded a grant for the project, "Comparing the Effect of Prolonged Hyposalinity Exposure on HSP70 Protein Expression of Mytilus galloprovincialis from Two Sites"

-Noopur Barve, a senior biology major and a member of the Covino Lab, was awarded a grant for the project, "Investigating Variation of Magnolia Warblers` (Setophaga Magnolia) Migration Patterns Through Hydrogen Isotope Ratio Analysis"

-Sofia Carranza, a senior biology major and a member of the Covino Lab, was awarded a grant for the project, "Unraveling Hatch-Order Differences in Parental Resources Allocation to Great Black-Backed Gull Chicks"

HAPPY THANKSGIVING from all of us at Seaver College

Last week the Seaver College Interdisciplinary Seminar brought students and faculty together to learn about Artificial Intelligence in Medicine while sipping on mocktails in a souvenir Seaver jar. The well-attended lecture featured professors Kevin Baldwin from Healthcare Systems Engineering and Jordan Freitas from Computer Science, and was led by Industry Practice Leader Stephen Speicher.

They discussed different aspects of artificial intelligence in health care, including the present and future use cases for AI in health care as well as ethical considerations in its applications. With a short history of AI and some modern examples of this in play today, it was a relevant and timely conversation about a cross-disciplinary problem Seaver students will be involved in solving both on campus and in their future careers.

The interdisciplinary seminar series is hosted by Seaver College to foster conversation, dialogue, and collaboration among faculty from different disciplines around a challenge facing our society while savoring a mocktail.
