50 years ago, President Donald P. Merrifield, S.J., and a group of progressive LMU educators identified the urgent need for cross-fertilization within the fields of STEM. The result was a merger of the Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics departments with the departments of Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering, establishing the college we now know as LMU Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering.
Therese Maynard is a beloved professor who has shaped the lives and careers of generations of students at Loyola Law School. Thanks to a $3.5 million gift from a former student, Maynard’s legacy will be honored in perpetuity through a newly endowed faculty position: the Therese Maynard Chair in Business Law.
Lee Avila ’81 was among the first in her family to graduate from college. She has served under three presidential administrations. She was also one of the original Laker Girls – the cheerleading squad of the Los Angeles basketball team. All this, and more, she credits to her experience as a student at Loyola Marymount University. That’s why she has pledged a $400,000 bequest to create an endowment for the Gonzalez Family Scholarship, which will support generations of Latina students at LMU.

When Robert Lu ’03 proposed a matching gift challenge of $100,000 in support of the Student Investment Fund (SIF) at the LMU College of Business Administration (CBA), the challenge was met by former CBA Dean John Wholihan, Ph.D., who inaugurated the SIF two decades ago. The fund gives CBA students the chance to gain practical experience of investing, and now that opportunity will be opened to students from across the university.
