LOS ANGELES – Loyola Law School, Los Angeles will honor Los Angeles Unified School District Board Vice President Dr. George J. McKenna III with its Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Public Service Award on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 6-8:30 p.m. at a ceremony and reception on Loyola’s downtown L.A. campus.
The Cochran Award is presented annually to an individual who embodies the qualities of Loyola alumnus Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. ’62, who was known as a trailblazer, innovator, master attorney and mentor. Mrs. Dale Mason Cochran, his widow, and Loyola Dean Michael Waterstone will present the award. Proceeds from the event will benefit Loyola’s African American Scholarship Fund.
A longtime teacher and school administrator, McKenna is nationally known for his turnaround efforts at schools in crisis, with an emphasis on underserved neighborhoods. School systems across the country have adapted his reform efforts. His life story was made into a major motion picture starring Denzel Washington, entitled “Hard Lessons.”
