This fall saw the release of two new books by LMU School of Education faculty members that explore complex and diverse areas within the field of education. Leavey Presidential Chair Antonia Darder co-edited the second edition of Latinos and Education: A Critical Reader with Rodolfo Torres, a professor at the University of California, Irvine. Candace Poindexter and Irene Oliver authored Making a Difference: Differentiated Instruction for Caring Teachers published by the National Catholic Educational Association.

Darder is an internationally recognized critical scholar and a leading voice in the exploration of issues of racial, class and language-based inequalities within the classroom. The first edition of Latinos and Education, published in 1997, has been recognized as a landmark publication and the first anthology of its kind to address the various complex issues affecting Latino students. The second edition published by Routledge furthers the study of the connection between education and the structural conditions that impact the Latino experience while exploring a wide range of themes, including issues of identity, the politics of language, culturally responsive pedagogy, immigrant youth, and community efforts for change. The anthology includes a chapter by Darder and separate chapters by SOE professors Magaly Lavadenz and Yvette Lapayese. Learn more.

In Making a Difference: Differentiated Instruction for Caring Teachers, Poindexter, a professor and director of literacy and reading programs, and Oliver, a professor, chair and director of elementary and secondary education, share a research-based approach to devising practical strategies for K-12 education. They draw upon the theories of Gardner’s multiple intelligences and learning styles as well as current neurological research to formulate methods for improved classroom teaching. The book features ways to incorporate technology into instruction and was developed out of feedback received from the authors’ earlier publication, Caring Classrooms for Caring Teachers.
