Senior Tamara Lawrence, a communication studies major and sociology minor, is the recipient of a CFA Council Scholarship, the Mr. and Mrs. William J. Daze, Sr. Scholarship and others. Tamara shares this first-hand perspective of how the scholarship assistance has furthered her college career.
I am grateful for the support I’ve had during my four years at LMU. My mother taught me that no matter how much I am struggling, never let that keep me down. I am a stronger student because of her and the support I’ve received from the LMU community.
I knew when I visited LMU this was the right place for me. But our financial situation couldn’t afford an LMU education. With the help of a CFA Council Scholarship, the Mr. and Mrs. William J. Daze, Sr. Scholarship and others, I was able to fulfill my dreams of attending an excellent college. My mother’s perseverance as a single mom to support four children, three of whom are in college, was an example of strength that I hope to follow.
Although paying for school has been a challenge, I have not given up on being a successful student. I have continuously been on the Dean’s List. I have also had the opportunity to join organizations, such as the Black Student Union, Feed the Hungry, and Sisters in Solidarity, where I am able to mentor freshmen and sophomores. Having scholarship assistance has enabled me to really take advantage of all that LMU has to offer.
My major is communication studies and last semester I studied in London, where I increased my intercultural communication skills. LMU has also led me to summer internships at Chevron’s marketing communications department, gaining experience in the workplace and preparing me to be a professional.
I have learned to take initiative to seek and compete for financial aid, as well as work my way through school. I have learned to be a more independent person, following my mother’s example.
LMU has given me the tools to make a successful career and I am thankful for the generous donors and scholarships that have made my education possible.
