LMU’s Laband Art Gallery is currently showing a retrospective of the work of LA-based artist June Edmonds, and critics are hailing the show as “bracing, “dazzling,” and “ravishing.” The show is currently on view through February 20, 2022.
Los Angeles Times
“For Edmonds…the more recent abstract paintings take off like a rocket. In a recent online lecture for the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and UC San Diego, she noted a recurrent tension within Black art since the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s: the clear need for Black representations of Black life in a white-dominated society presses against the freedom to explore other artistic avenues.”
White Hot Magazine
“Edmonds continues to defy dominant trends in order to pursue her personal process of discovery based on close observation. Her vibrant paintings weave different stories together in inclusive abstract forms to emphasize process, presence and positivity.”
