#5 for Tax Law; #8 for Trial Advocacy; #11 for Part-Time Program
LOS ANGELES – Loyola Law School, Los Angeles is ranked No. 65 out of 196 law schools in U.S. News & World Report’s 2017 edition of “America’s Best Graduate Schools.” This marks the second consecutive year of double-digit ascent for Loyola, which saw the sharpest rise of any California law school.
The Law School is now ranked in the top 10 in two specialty categories: No. 5 in Tax Law and No. 8 in Trial Advocacy, as well as No. 21 in Legal Writing. Loyola’s Evening Division Program is ranked No. 11 out of 79 part-time programs, making it the top-ranked program on the West Coast. Additionally, Loyola is No. 9 on the Diversity Index, which measures the proportion of minority students on campus – up 11 positions from last year.
“For more than 90 years, we have strived to do what’s best for our students: prepare them to be excellent lawyers and help them obtain jobs that allow them to do just that,” said Interim Dean Paul T. Hayden, Thomas J. Girardi Professor of Consumer Protection Law. “Our faculty and staff innovate in the classroom, in our experiential offerings and in our career development opportunities – and our dynamic students and alumni are among the best anywhere.”
The specialty rankings, which are based on evaluations by professors who teach in the field, reflect the longstanding excellence of Loyola’s core skills and subject-area training. Loyola’s Tax Law program has been ranked in the top 10 for six of the last seven years. The school’s Trial Advocacy program has been ranked in the top 10 for nine of the last 11 years. The Law School retakes its previously held No. 21 position for Legal Writing. And the Evening Division Program remains the top-ranked part-time law program in California for the fourth year in a row.
About the U.S. News rankings
The rankings include 196 American Bar Association-accredited law schools. U.S. News ranked the schools based on data collected in the fall of 2015 and early 2016. The rankings are based on a weighted average of a series of quality measures, including peer assessment score, assessment score by lawyers/judges, median LSAT scores, median undergrad GPA, acceptance rate, employment rates for graduates, bar-passage rate, expenditures per student, student/faculty ratio and library resources. The part-time rankings evaluate the 79 law schools offering part-time programs and are based on a weighted average of four areas: quality assessment, selectivity, part-time focus and overall rank.
