LOS ANGELES – LMU Loyola Law School has launched the Transactional Lawyering Institute to bolster its offerings in business law and related practice areas, building on its highly regarded Business Law Practicum and incorporating an advisory board composed of top Southern California transactional attorneys.
The new initiative, founded by William G. Coskran Professor Therese Maynard, expands on the law school’s longtime support of innovative course offerings through the Business Law Practicum, which have included a course on start-ups and venture-capital financing and an annual deal negotiation competition.
In establishing the TLI, the law school seeks to build on its established course offerings and reflect the other programming LLS supports with a view toward educating the next generation of transactional lawyers. This programming includes further expansions of the law school’s business law curriculum, connecting alumni in the business law community to each other and to current students through speaker events on campus, and hosting continuing legal education events for alumni.
“We are thrilled to continue to provide students the opportunity to understand what a lawyer really does in a transactional practice through experiential course offerings and practice-minded events,” said TLI Director Shannon Treviño, an associate clinical professor and 2006 Loyola Law School alumna.
Additionally, the TLI leads the Business Law Fellows program, which introduces select first-year students to exclusive gatherings of alumni. It also conducts educational outreach to underserved high-school students on the role of business lawyers in society.
Professors Maynard and Treviño have formed an advisory board to provide strategic guidance to the Transactional Lawyering Institute. Board members are Maynard (Ex Officio); Scott Alderton ’85, Stubbs Alderton & Markiles LLP; Ashley Boardman ’11, Silicon Beach Legal, PLC; Shawn Domzalski ’06, Blank Rome LLP; Christine Fitzgerald ’96, Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP; Kendra Jones JD/MBA ’99, Epson America; and Jeff Sklar ’01, Sklar Kirsh LLP.
“Increasing our level of engagement with alumni in the business law community is a key focus of the Transactional Lawyering Institute,” said Treviño. “I am proud to be a part of expanding the program and, in doing so, maximizing career opportunities for our students.”
