LOS ANGELES — Olympian, activist, and bestselling author Abby Wambach urged Loyola Marymount University graduates to “be the news” at a commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 7, on the Westchester campus.
“The world out there is big. Sometimes, when I watch the news it all just feels too big, too broken, too far gone. It’s hard to know where to start,” said Wambach, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, FIFA World Cup Champion, and six-time winner of the U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year award.
“Don’t spend your life watching the news. … Instead: Be the news,” Wambach, an activist for equality and inclusion, told the graduates. “The good news I have for you today, LMU, is that there are worlds out there waiting to be forever changed by you. Go forth and make a new world by doing unto others as you’d have them do unto you.”
LMU’s commencement ceremony returned to campus following a pandemic-related postponement in 2020 and a combined celebration for the Classes of 2020 and 2021, the largest commencement event in university history, held last year at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
