Cecilia González-Andrieu, professor of theology and human rights at LMU, commented on the appointment of Bishop Manuel de Jesús Rodríguez to the Palm Beach diocese, where his support for immigrants and progressive values are largely at odds with the political views of many in the region. “The church has to be political in that it has to respond to the pain of the world, and cannot stand apart from the world, and so it has to enmesh itself in issues that affect the human family…That requires that there are things that have to be defended, no matter who is in the White House or what the party is in power. There’s a higher law.”
