Laurie Levenson, a professor at LMU Loyola Law School, said the parole board now takes a more “holistic approach” that considers the background and rehabilitation efforts by release candidates. “I do think over time the focus of the parole commission has been less on the crime and more on the defendants and who they are now and what responsibility they have taken,” Levenson said.
