Thomas Rausch, S.J., emeritus professor of theological studies at LMU, defined the word “schism” in relation to the Vatican’s recent excommunication of members of the Society of St. Pius X. “Schism means that you have broken communion with the church. You’re no longer in a proper relationship with it – breaking off because of some theological position or some quarrel with authority.”
