Joseph Reichenberger, professor of civil engineering and environmental science at LMU, commented on the water main break that has flooded neighborhoods in West Hollywood. “It got pretty hot. People started using a lot of water and that creates pressure drops in the system, which makes it vulnerable to surges. Pumps start to keep up with the systems, which tend to increase the pressures, and that has a lot to do with why some of these systems fail.”
