Alissa Crans, professor of mathematics and a fellow of the Association for Women in Mathematics, writes in the Scientific American: “As a mathematician, I’m tickled that honoring something mathematical has become a widespread phenomenon. But, at the same time, I’m disappointed that this numerical celebrity seems to be somewhat of an accident. There is so much more to math than one solitary number, regardless of however many digits you can recite from memory.”
