With commencement upon us, we spoke to some of CFA’s stand-out 2023 graduates as they gear up to leave LMU and take on the world.
Jimmy Warshawsky, ‘23
Major: Communication Studies; M-School
Next up for Jimmy: Junior Creative for Digital Copy at Saatchi & Saatchi
How did you decide to become a communication studies major?
I decided to come a communication studies major because I’ve always loved writing, speaking, and communicating in all sorts of ways. I also have always had a passion for media and have really enjoyed my media studies concentration at LMU. Originally, I thought I would be using my CMST major to pursue a degree in entertainment, but I have since pivoted into pursuing advertising! An awesome part about the CMST major is that it can apply to so many other disciplines.
Tell us a little about your time at LMU!
My main involvement at LMU outside of my communication studies major is the M-School! The M-School at its core is a two-year creative marketing program that’s open to all majors, but it’s really so much more than that. We just finished up our capstone project which involved submitting an entry into a national collegiate marketing competition, so fingers crossed! I’ve also spent the last year serving as a director of Agency M, the M-School’s in-house marketing agency. My team and I got to make a bunch of cool content which you can check out on the M-School’s Instagram.
One of my other largest involvements has been with the LMU Pickleball Club. I founded the club in my junior year and grew it into one of the biggest and most thriving collegiate pickleball clubs in the country. In fact, at the end of last year, we were able to compete in the first ever collegiate pickleball national championship in Texas!
I have also studied abroad in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and have worked two on-campus jobs. I have been an LMU campus tour guide for all four of my years here, which has been super fun, and I’ve also served as the public address announcer for our D1 baseball, softball, and soccer teams. Lastly, I’ve played on the club tennis team and been involved in Jewish Student Life on campus!
What are your post-graduation plans?
After graduation I’ll be working as a Junior Creative for Digital Copy at Saatchi & Saatchi, on the Toyota account! I hope to continue down the path of creative advertising, moving up to becoming a senior copywriter and eventually a creative director at a high-profile ad agency. I’d love to work on accounts and with clients who are fun, wacky, creative, inspirational, and disruptive.
Did you have a particular experience that led you to this path?
Through LMU I’ve made a ton of networking connections, learned so much about the advertising industry, and built a portfolio of work that I am super proud of. All of these things helped me find and get this job, which still feels like a dream.
What will you miss most about LMU?
I’ll miss just about everything at LMU. I’ll miss my apartment, and the insanely beautiful campus. I’ll miss the incredible staff and faculty and professors. I’ll miss the perfect bluff weather. I’ll miss pickleball club and Hillel and honors. I’ll miss giving tours and my fellow tour guides. I’ll miss watching the games, and I’ll miss announcing them even more. I’ll miss saying hi to people on Palm Walk. I’ll miss Qdoba. I’ll miss the M-School. And above all, I’ll miss my best friends, but I’m so thankful to LMU for bringing us together for these past four years.
What advice do you have for underclassmen?
Savor these moments. Savor the sunny weather, because you never know when it might rain. Savor the time you spend with your friends, because you don’t know where you’ll all end up. Savor every minute that you get to spend here, because one day you’ll wake up and you’ll be graduated. I’m beyond excited for what’s next in my life, but these moments are moments that I’ll cherish for many years to come, so relish in them while you can!
