LMU Facilities Management recently announced plans for summer construction projects on the Westchester campus, which include necessary renovations and upgrades to such high-profile campus spots as Sacred Heart Chapel, the Burns Recreation Center pool, and LMU Children’s Center.
The improvements will necessitate temporary closures and relocations for the duration of the work, which have been previously communicated to impacted parties.
You can learn more about Facilities’ more high-profile summer 2026 projects below, including expected closure dates and other need-to-know info.
Burns Recreation Center Pool
Closure Dates: April 22 – Sept. 1
The BRC pool originally opened in fall 2000, and 25 years of daily use have necessitated extensive upgrades. Facilities will fully replaster the pool and replace the surrounding deck, along with replacing all tiles, lights, and handrails. The pool and surrounding deck access will be fully off-limits during this time. For questions, please contact [email protected] or stop by the Burns Rec Center front desk.
Sacred Heart Chapel
Closure Dates: June 1 – Aug. 20
Sacred Heart Chapel will see accessibility upgrades this summer, with the installation of an ADA ramp along the predella in front of the altar, and installation of an ADA lift for basement access. Additionally, the concrete gathering area and stairs in front of the chapel will be redone. Sacred Heart Chapel will remain open during construction, with evening and weekend Mass following the standard summer schedule. For questions, please contact [email protected].
LMU Children’s Center
Closure Dates: May 18 – Aug. 7
The Children’s Center will receive various infrastructure improvements intended to address the long-term functionality of the space, including plumbing updates, drainage improvements, floor replacements, and building trim repairs. During construction, the Children’s Center will temporarily relocate across campus. You can learn more at the LMUCC Temporary Relocation FAQs page.
University Hall Escalators
Repair Dates: March 30 – May 15; fall 2026 – spring 2027
Efforts are ongoing to repair the University Hall escalators. For 6 weeks in April and May, internal demolition work will operate during overnight hours (10 p.m. – 7 a.m.). There will be a pause in work this summer, while replacement parts are ordered. Once the new parts arrive, work will continue during overnight hours through the fall 2026 and spring 2027 semesters.
Other Summer 2026 Projects
Additionally, further repair and enhancement projects will be conducted this summer that do not impede or otherwise affect campus activity. The non-exhaustive list includes:
- Campus Storm Drainage: the installation of new storm drainage will cause trench plates to be installed along Loyola Blvd. between April – June for pedestrian and vehicle access during construction. Please note there will be temporary closures of Loyola Blvd. intermittently throughout the project, which will be shared with the community ahead of time.
- Bluff: mitigation and repair of bluff soil and LMU letters are ongoing
- Helipad: the helipad located at the LMU Drive entrance will be removed and replaced with landscaping
- Gersten Pavilion: the roof at Gersten will be replaced, with new solar panels reinstalled
- Hannon Apartments: the roof will be replaced
- Palm South and Doheny: all door locks will be replaced with a tap system accessible by OneCard
As previously shared in LMU This Week, The Lair will undergo significant upgrades beginning April 27, including both a reimagined dining space and accompanying menu options. For further information related to summer construction projects, please contact [email protected].
