This year’s Christmas message was made possible by support from our Additive Manufacturing student organization. The group designed and 3D printed this festive ornament in blue and red that evoke LMU! The whole process took more than 16 hours, thanks to the differently colored filaments they used to make the decoration.
“Creating a Seaver-themed ornament required us to think creatively and logically. We needed to consider what would look good aesthetically, and what was possible using our printer,” said Jacob Parker ’26, mechanical engineering major and project lead.
The Additive Manufacturing Club focuses on teaching students how to design and then 3D print their own projects. They investigate the techniques and applications of additive manufacturing, with a focus on its relevance to interdisciplinary projects in various STEM areas. They have also manufactured parts for engineering capstone projects, LMU Incubator Businesses, and several Seaver College units.
“Learning about additive manufacturing allows me to gain hands-on experience in design, prototyping, and problem-solving, all of which are essential skills in engineering. Working directly with 3D printers allows me to work with cutting edge technologies that have practical applications in industry,” said Additive Manufacturing Club President and mechanical engineering major Lukas Foassis ’26.
“Being involved in a student organization has enhanced my Seaver experience by encouraging a place of community and teamwork. It has provided opportunities to collaborate with peers and apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects, making my education more impactful and practical.”
