From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, LMU celebrates Latinx Heritage Month with new celebrations and favorite signature events to honor the culture and traditions of U.S. residents with cultural ties to Latin America. These celebrations are not simply events the integral parts of our community that foster a sense of belonging and value for our Latinx students.
Some of the latest events or collaborations include programs focused on the upcoming presidential election, Justice on Tap featuring Dolores Delgado Bernal, Ph.D., interim co-chair of the doctoral program in Educational Leadership for Social Justice in the LMU School of Education, an alumni speaker series with the Outdoor and Adventure Recreation program, a trip to the Getty Center and a tour of Warner Brothers Studios.
“This year, we have been so grateful for all of the collaborations across the campus community to create such a robust calendar of events and programs that the entire LMU community can engage with to learn about Latinx Heritage Month,” said Claudio Rodriguez, director of Chicano/a Latino/a Student Services. “I wanted to focus on having more alumni involved in various programs because the LMU community needs to see people from our community interacting with one another and creating a culture of mentorship.”
Rodriguez hopes the monthlong celebration will help to create a sense of community belonging for those students in the Latinx community at LMU. “I hope our incoming first-year students feel like we are here for them and they can interact with older students, so as they navigate their four years at LMU, they know there’s someone who is here for them.”
