Dec. 16, 2025
Dear LMU Community:
I am saddened to share that Florante Peter Ibañez, retired librarian at LMU Loyola Law School, passed away on Nov. 30, 2025. He was 74 years old.
Mr. Ibañez joined LMU Loyola Law School in 1992 and served as manager of Library Computer Services until his retirement in 2020. For nearly three decades, he supported the work of the law school and its students, faculty, and staff in numerous ways, including serving as the LLS representative on the LMU Staff Senate for many years.
Beyond LMU, Mr. Ibañez was deeply engaged in the Filipino community. He co-founded UCLA’s Samahang Pilipino and UC Irvine’s Kababayan; co-authored the book “Filipinos in Carson and the South Bay” with his wife, Roselyn Estepe; and established the Florante Peter Ibañez Collection at CSU Dominguez Hills, documenting Filipino American history, culture, activism, and community events from roughly the 1940s through the 2020s. Mr. Ibañez was president of the Kayumanggi Lions Club and Asian/Pacific Librarians Association, and a board member of Search to Involve Pilipino Americans, the Filipino American Library, and FilAm ARTS.
Mr. Ibañez earned his M.A. in Asian American Studies and library information science at UCLA, and his B.A. in comparative cultures from UC Irvine.
A viewing will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025, at Green Hills Mortuary and Memorial Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that those who wish to honor Mr. Ibañez consider making a donation to assist with related expenses. For details on contributing, please email Mikaela Ibanez.
Please keep Florante, his family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Thomas Poon, Ph.D.
President and Professor of Chemistry
