On September 22, Woody Woodpecker & the Avant-Garde: A Collision of Animation, Art, Avant-Garde Film and Politics opens at the Laband Gallery. Curated by SFTV Chair of Animation Tom Klein, the exhibit will offer the rare chance to see original storyboards and animation cels including art from Woody Woodpecker’s debut in Knock Knock (1940), focused studies of 1940s films by Walter Lantz Productions including The Loose Nut and The Enemy Bacteria, plus paintings and watercolors by Jules Engel, Oskar Fischinger, Losar Feiltelson, Knud Merrild and Byron Randall.
This special exhibit also celebrates a major gift to LMU School of Film and Television from The Walter Lantz Foundation. Along with the gift, the Foundation donated several works of art, many of which will be on view.
