Michelle D. Young Ph.D., professor and dean of LMU School of Education (SOE), named William Perez, Ph.D., to the newly created position of Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). He will assume his new role on January 1, 2021.
Perez currently serves as co-chair of SOE’s DEI Action Committee, or DAC, which is leading the school on its transformative DEI efforts, including a focus in 2020-21 on learning to understand and dismantle anti-Black racism.
In his new role he’ll be responsible for ensuring that SOE and DAC make progress on the goals it sets as a school, and will support faculty development in the areas of research and teaching. “Perez brings significant expertise and leadership experience to this role, and I’m confident he will contribute substantively,” said Young.
An immigrant from El Salvador, Perez is an expert on education, immigration, and multilingualism. He’s the author of several books on the topic of undocumented Latino students and education. He joined LMU as professor in SOE’s Department of Educational Leadership and Administration in 2018. “I’m honored to serve in this new role, and I intend to make SOE a leader among education schools in dismantling systemic racism,” he said.
