With graduation upon us, we spoke to some of CFA’s talented #LMU20 graduates as they gear up to leave LMU and take on the world. In our We Love Our Grads series, we asked a graduating student from each of our departments to share some words about their time here, as well as their plans for the future.
Allie Carr ‘20
Major: Art History
Next steps: Museum education
How did you decide to become an art history major?
I have always had a love for art and a fascination with history, so art history made sense for me as a perfect combination of the two. Museum education is my passion, which I discovered in high school as a volunteer at the New Children’s Museum of San Diego.
Tell us a little about your time at LMU!
I participated as an artist mentor for the ARTsmart program for all four years, and I think it provides an amazing opportunity for students to gain a hands-on experience with art education. I had a work study position at the Laband Art Gallery on campus, and another work study position as an administrative assistant at Student Employment Services. I highly recommend that all students apply for work study and try working on campus, because it helps in creating a sense of community and confidence.
I have also been an active member in Alpha Chi Omega for three years, which helped to make my experience at LMU special and I am so thankful for each and every one of the friends I’ve met there. I was also able to have the position of treasurer for the LMU Women’s Lacrosse Club during my sophomore year.
What are your post-graduation plans?
After graduation, I plan to work in a museum setting, ideally in the education department. Eventually, I would love to eventually become the Director of the Education Department at an art museum.
How do you feel LMU prepared you for this next step?
The academics, experiences, mentorship, and friendships that I have made during my time at LMU have helped to shape me into the person I am today. Thanks to the LMU community, I feel confident in myself and my future. LMU has felt like a second home to me. I will miss the community, but I know that I can always come back to visit and feel just as welcomed.
What advice do you have for underclassmen?
Take advantage of all of the opportunities that LMU and Los Angeles have to offer. Explore and say yes to things you would have never agreed to before. Remember to have fun and enjoy every moment, because it all goes by fast.
