On Monday, November 6, 2017, Shane P. Martin, dean and professor of the LMU School of Education, delivered his annual convocation address, which celebrated the rich Jesuit and Marymount history and legacy of the LMU SOE in honor of its 25th anniversary as a school of education.
The establishment of the LMU SOE in 1992 signified its expansion as a professional learning community, although education courses were offered at Loyola University as early as the 1930s, and LMU’s first teacher education program was established in 1948. Through the merger of Loyola University and Marymount College in 1973, which joined secondary and elementary education programs, the LMU SOE became the comprehensive school that it is today.
Today, the LMU SOE that began in the basement of the Sacred Heart Chapel offers a range of more than 40 degree and certificate programs, which include administration, bilingual teacher education, reading, school psychology, counseling, special education and higher education. It has also built meaningful partnerships with PreK-20 stakeholders and now includes more than 20 centers, initiatives and partnerships. The wide range of innovative programs and partnerships led by LMU SOE’s distinguished faculty and staff demonstrates its unwavering commitment to elevating education – a commitment that has been at the core of its mission since the beginning.

The address also features greetings from elected officials and leaders in education who make a difference in schools and communities in Los Angeles and across the globe. The address includes messages from Homeboy Industries Founder Fr. Greg Boyle; CA State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson; Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles Carlos Eugenio Garcia de Alba Zepeda; Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and many more.
The address took place at the Hilton Auditorium in LMU’s Conrad N. Hilton Center for Business to an audience of more than 200 attendees.
