On Monday, November 14, 2016, Shane P. Martin, dean and professor of the LMU School of Education, delivered his annual convocation address, Education in the time of cholera*: Is there a future for our democratic society? *With apologies to Gabriel García Márquez.
The address focused on examining the heightened rhetoric and contentiousness in our national discourse, as well as our work in education. Dean Martin offered reflections on how we can find love, civility and colleagueship today despite what we’ve seen in the recent election cycle and within the educational landscape.
The address explored the roots of education in America, and shares how systemic and institutional racism and discrimination impacts our classrooms and our youth. Despite the challenges our country faces today, Dean Martin affirmed that education is the pathway for the future of our democracy, and shared how the mission of the LMU School of Education – focused on inclusion and collaboration – is committed to making positive impact across schools, communities and society through the Jesuit/Marymount educational tradition.
The address took place at the Hilton Auditorium in LMU’s Conrad N. Hilton Center for Business to an audience of more than 200 attendees.
