It was a rare moment in Catholic Church history: the pope resigned his position in February 2013 and a new pope was elected. The last time that had happened was about 600 years ago. What that sequence of events meant for the Church is the subject of ongoing study and discussion.
The LMU community will have a chance to see the highly anticipated film “The Two Popes” before it hits theaters. Movie Mondays at the Mayer has partnered with Netflix to bring director Fernando Meirelles and producer Tracey Seaward and their film to the Mayer Theater on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019, at 7:15 p.m. A discussion with Meirelles and Seaward will follow. The film, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, dramatizes the series of events in a way that offers insight into the personalities and consequences involved. With outstanding performances from Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, “The Two Popes” is a triumph of writing as well as unostentatious filmmaking, said The Hollywood Reporter. It was written by Anthony McCarten (“The Theory of Everything,” “Darkest Hour”) and directed by Meirelles, who earned an Oscar nomination for “City of God.”
