Tsehai Publishers and Loyola Marymount University are illuminating African thought and history with their presentation of “Experience Tsehai” at the Library of Congress’s Mumford Room on Saturday, June 25, from 2 to 5 p.m.
The event highlights how books can be instruments for positive social change.
The program and book signing will feature Elias Wondimu, founder of Tsehai Publishers, and Mary-Jane Wagle, editor of “Temsalet: Phenomenal Ethiopian Women,” one of the most powerful and critically acclaimed books Tsehai’s catalog. Tsehai Publishers is housed at Loyola Marymount University and is the only African publisher based in an American university.
To date, more than 30,000 copies of “Temsalet” in Amharic have been distributed at no cost throughout Ethiopia to schools, libraries, girls’ clubs and other organizations working for female empowerment. Currently, Tsehai is offering the book in both Amharic and English and a portion of the proceeds goes to benefit the Network of Ethiopian Women’s Associations.
The Library of Congress event will also focus on the other divisions of Tsehai Publishers — film, music and other initiatives that provide a platform for Pan-African voices.
Helen Mesfin of the Ethiopian Broadcasting Service’s “The Helen Show” will be mistress of ceremonies for the evening, which is open to the public.
Media sponsors for this event include Voice of America, Tayitu Cultural and Educational Center, Zethiopia, Tadias Magazine and EBS TV.
