Lori Pawinski, an adjunct SOE professor and triple LMU alumna (BA ’85, MA School Administration ’91 and EdD ’07), was recently named chief academic officer of LA’s Promise. LA’s Promise partners with a cadre of schools in South Los Angeles to ensure that students growing up in poverty receive an excellent education.
An experienced school leader, Pawinski most recently served as principal of Ánimo Jackie Robinson Charter High School, part of Green Dot Public School’s network of high-performing charter schools. During her tenure, Ánimo Jackie Robinson’s API score grew by 200 points and it has been named a Title I Academic Achievement Award School by the California Department of Education. Both Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report also have recognized the campus as one of America’s best. As an adjunct professor at the LMU School of Education, her courses address the essential elements of high performing schools.
LA’s Promise is working to improve the education, health and social outcomes for thousands of young people in one South Los Angeles community – LA’s Promise Neighborhood, an enrollment zone that includes two large South LA high schools (Manual Arts and West Adams Prep) and one middle school (John Muir). LA’s Promise operates these schools in a first-of-its-kind performance contract with the Los Angeles Unified School District. Within this zone, LA’s Promise transforms chronically failing public schools, opens new schools and remakes schools into community hubs that offer comprehensive support services for students and families.
