
Dr. Abhik Roy, Professor of Communication Studies, recently partnered with Kumiko Yamamoto, DAOM, LAc, Dipl. O.M. to hold an afternoon of tai chi on the bluff. Yamamoto is a certified Ni Family Tai Chi and Qi Gong Instructor and a doctor of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine; she shared here expertise with members of Doctor Roy’s “Spiritualism and Loving Relationships” class as well as other members of the LMU community as she lead them through a sample session in tai chi.
The tai chi event was brought to campus to enrich the educational experience of the student’s in Dr. Roy’s class, Spiritualism and Loving Relationships. The class examines the dimensions and dynamics of relationships from the perspective of spirituality, and the role of communication in shaping these relationships that constitute our day to day lives. The class explores themes spiritual enrichment and transformation in relationships with romantic partners, family, and friends.
In line with the goals of the class, as well as with the universities overall mission of educating the whole person, learning tai chi offered a lesson in balancing the student’s minds, bodies, and spirits. The session serves an example of the creative ways LMU professors build their classes and enrich their students learning experiences.
