Interns from LMU’s Coastal Research Institute joined researchers from The Bay Foundation and Southern California Marine Institute on Friday, September 13th, in a collaborative effort to measure and tag over 1,000 white abalone, which are plant-eating marine snails that were once common off the coast of California. Now, white abalone are federally endangered throughout their range. These juvenile abalone were spawned and grown at UC Davis’ Bodega Marine Lab and are being tagged before release in the ocean next month where they will be monitored over time. Other partners on this restoration project include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Paua Marine Research Group.
