Loyola Marymount University’s Center for Catholic Education has won the Dr. Karen M. Ristau Innovation Award for its comprehensive approach to furthering the mission of Catholic education.
The award, given by the National Catholic Educational Association, recognized the Center for Catholic Education for its innovation in providing instruction, leadership and support for Catholic education, particularly through programs including PLACE (Partners in Los Angeles Catholic Education) Corps, CAST (Catholic Archdiocesan School Teachers) and the Catholic School Leadership Academy.
The center, housed in the LMU School of Education, is one of the largest educators of Catholic teachers and administrators in the country, with well over 1,600 Catholic education graduates since 2001; the center is a hub of research and scholarly activity on Catholic schools at the international, national, and regional levels; and the center provides professional development in targeted areas of need to sustain and strengthen Catholic schools at a time when these schools face multiple challenges. The Center is currently home to the Journal of Catholic Education, an international journal on Catholic education from PreK through higher education.
The NCEA also honored Mary Angela Shaughnessy, S.C.N., the Distinguished Fellow of LMU’s CCE. Sister Shaughnessy, dean of the graduate school, legal counsel and ADA services consultant for St. Catharine College in Kentucky, was awarded the C. Albert Koob Merit Award for her contributions to Catholic education.
“NCEA’s recognition of the Center for Catholic Education is a testament to our programs, partnerships and research that make such an impact on Catholic schools in Southern California and across the United States,” said Shane P. Martin, dean of the School of Education. “We’re also pleased that NCEA has recognized Sr. Mary Angela Shaughnessy for her extraordinary leadership and service to Catholic schools. It’s through the Center for Catholic Education that LMU works to strengthen and support Catholic schools for the common good of society.”
The awards will be presented at the NCEA’s 2016 Convention & Expo, March 29-31 at the San Diego Convention Center.
