The Loyola Marymount University School of Education was accepted as the newest member of the University Council for Educational Administration, the leading professional organization for top institutions with faculty and programs in educational leadership. Granted membership as a research utilizing institution, LMU is the third university from California and the third Jesuit university nationally to join UCEA.
Founded more than 50 years ago, UCEA is a nonprofit consortium of just under 100 research and doctoral granting institutions committed to:
- Promoting, sponsoring and disseminating research on the essential problems of schooling and leadership practice
- Improving the preparation and professional development of educational leaders and professors
- Positively influencing local, state, and national educational policy
Through programs that prepare the next generation of education leaders, UCEA members are deeply connected to the field. UCEA is also a part of several national networks of educational administration organizations focused on improving the field, including the National Policy Board for Educational Administration.
“UCEA is excited to welcome the Loyola Marymount University School of Education into its organization as we continue to work together to strengthen educational leadership for the benefit of all students,” said Michelle Young, executive director of UCEA.
The SOE’s Department of Educational Leadership and Administration houses our faculty and programs in these areas, including an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership for Social Justice and master’s, credential and certificate programs.
The LMU Ed.D. program provides experienced educators and community leaders with the tools, theories, and experiences necessary to transform educational settings into inclusive and equitable learning environments. Combining theory with practice, the curriculum instills in candidates a better understanding of the complex issues impacting education and student success and prepares graduates to become change agents in organizations and communities. Recent graduates serve in senior leadership roles with Los Angeles Unified School District and Camino Nuevo Charter Academy among others.
LMU’s Institute of School Leadership and Administration (ISLA) offers preparation programs for public, charter and private school leaders. LMU is recognized as an innovator in charter and Catholic school leadership through its Charter School Leadership and Catholic School Leadership Academies. The ISLA programs prepare students to serve as ethical, respectful and transformative educational leaders. Recent graduates serve as principals in other administrative positions in numerous public, charter and Catholic schools in Los Angeles and beyond.
One of the department’s faculty members – Martha McCarthy, SOE’s first President’s Professor – has long ties to UCEA, having served as its president from 1985-1986. She was awarded the organization’s 2011 Edwin M. Bridges Award and 2004 Roald Campbell Lifetime Achievement Award. McCarthy joined the LMU School of Education in 2011 from the Indiana University School of Education, where she is Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus.
