LMU’s School of Film and Television welcomes Associate Professor Margaret Murphy.
In her long career working with some of the biggest names in television production, Professor Murphy has been involved in the development and supervision of many critically acclaimed and award-winning shows such as: The Simpsons; Buffy the Vampire Slayer; The X-Files; Malcolm in the Middle and Veronica Mars. Her previous collaborations with A-list producers include working with Rob Thomas, David E. Kelley, Darren Star, Ron Moore, Howard Gordon and David Shore. Her strong industry connections with networks, studios and international distributors will be a boon to SFTV internship and networking programs.
While at UCLA, Professor Murphy mentored students from initial pitch to development and distribution. Some notable students include Steven Canals (Ryan Murphy’s Pose); J.R. Edwards (writer on Orange is the New Black and Alan Ball’s HBO series Here and Now); Felischa Marye (writer for Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why); and Raeann Giles (digital series SAHM: Stay at Home Mom now streaming on Amazon). Ms. Murphy’s extensive experience developing international co-productions and working in the burgeoning disciplines of new media, digital and multi-platform programming will help our students learn not only how to create their projects, but to package and present them, and themselves, to the industry.
Professor Murphy’s experience also includes speaking to and developing workshops for a global audience addressing: television and film development, acting for the camera, women’s role in the industry, developing content for digital platforms, selling to domestic and international markets and monetizing content through brand sponsorships – all of which will provide SFTV students with first-hand practical knowledge that will allow them to navigate the transition from student to working creative professional.
