Ben Gross MFA ’18 (Writing for the Screen) was chosen this week for the Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television (SFTV) Screenwriting Fellowship as part of Film Independent’s prestigious annual Screenwriting Lab program.
Gross is the eighth SFTV student to receive this fellowship. He’ll get a $10,000 grant to further develop the script for his feature film Mijo/Son, which follows the case of an undocumented immigrant who must fight for custody of her son after her arrest by ICE agents. He’s one of seven recipients of a spot in the Lab in 2020.
The Screenwriting Lab, now in its 22nd year, is designed to help emerging screenwriters with fiction feature screenplays enrich their stories and develop their careers. The program is supported by SFTV, Writers Guild of America West, and Final Draft.
Film Independent is a leading non-profit that helps filmmakers make their movies, build an audience for their projects, and work to diversify the film industry. SFTV partners with Film Independent on several initiatives, including The Portal, the groundbreaking annual immersive storytelling showcase featuring top projects from around the world, which premiered at LMU’s Playa Vista campus in 2018. SFTV will host the Film Independent Forum at the Playa Vista campus from May 1-3, 2020, where interactive panels, workshops, and in-depth discussions will give attendees the tools and knowledge they need to get their projects off the ground.
