Dr. Magaly Lavadenz, the founding executive director of the Center for Equity for English Learners (CEEL), was named the second Leavey Endowed Professor of Moral and Ethical Leadership at LMU School of Education on May 12, 2022.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President and Provost Thomas Poon during an event honoring the 15th anniversary of CEEL, a School of Education-based research center and think tank that offers programs, resources, and professional development opportunities that promote equity, excellence, and advocacy for multilingualism in preK-12 schools.
“The Leavey Presidential Chair was established in 2011 to ensure that deep conversations about social justice, in theory and practice, would be fundamentally linked to ethical and moral questions across LMU School of Education,” Poon said. “It is fitting that Dr. Lavadenz steps into this role, as her research and scholarship have been built on advocacy for English language learners.”
The endowed position is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Foundation. The first person to hold the chairship was scholar, artist, and activist Antonia Darder, who retired from LMU in May 2022 after a long and illustrious career in education.
