Alani Jordal, a sophomore music major at LMU, spent her summer interning at New11 Music Group, a New York City-based company that works with talent in promoting and signing up-and-coming artists, while also specializing in hip-hop talent.
Jordal’s lifelong passion for music and singing is what initially sparked her interest in pursuing a career path in the music industry. She first discovered this opportunity through her previous internship at Cinematic Music Group (now GoodTalk). Through this professional experience, Jordal was able network and make connections, which led to her meeting David Kaufman, one of the co-founders of New11.
Throughout her internship, Jordal was able to further her professional and creative skills on multiple levels. According to Jordal, some of her day-to-day projects consisted of compiling data and creating spreadsheets on historically successful social campaigns for song releases, finding users to act as music ambassadors, and creating promotional ideas for future releases. She was also able to create promotional strategies and videos for artists.
This opportunity taught Jordal about the importance of fostering and maintaining connections in the industry in order to be successful. “The most meaningful part of the experience was how much my colleagues at New11 wanted to teach me, rooted for me, and genuinely wanted me to succeed,” Jordal said. “I know how important it is to make professional connections in the business and how keeping in touch with people is one of the key factors to finding new opportunities.”
Reflecting on her experience at New11, Jordal said “All of the times I got to work in the city and be in-person to discuss plans and create were the moments that stood out to me the most. I loved being able to think creatively with people, learn about artists and their recent or upcoming releases, and how quick you have to be in the business. Through this experience, I was able to get an extensive look as to what it takes to run a music label from the co-founder himself.”
