Dr. Herbert A. Medina is the 2014 on-site director for the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Undergraduate Program (MSRI-UP, www.msri.org/up) in Berkeley, CA. MSRI-UP is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) whose primary goal is to increase the number of graduate degrees in the mathematical sciences, especially doctorates, earned by U.S. citizens and permanent residents by cultivating heretofore untapped mathematical talent. The summer research experience along with subsequent professional development opportunities and mentoring are designed to cultivate the mathematical talent of the MSRI-UP undergraduates. Prof. Medina served as on-site director for the 2009 MSRI-UP and as principal investigator in the 2009 National Security Agency grant (NSA, grant No.H98230-09-0103 for $170K) that partially funded the project. He continues to be involved with the seventeen 2009 MSRI-UP students and in the 2010 program which will work with its fourth cohort of students. He is a co-director of the program.
