Students and professors celebrated the Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival 春节, with a day of culturally-inspired food, activities, and festive decorations. On Monday, January 28, the Modern Languages and Literatures Department welcomed guests from the Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles. Experienced teachers, the teachers introduced the stories of Chinese New Year (“nian,” 年), and explained the cultural connotations of celebration activities. They guided our students in the practice of Chinese calligraphy, and taught them to write Spring Festival Couplets on red scrolls. Together they made traditional decorations. At lunch time, participants enjoyed delicious Chinese food, and several kinds of tea.
