The Loyola Marymount University men’s basketball fans who left a packed Gersten Pavilion on Thursday night were exhilarated by the Lions’ 57-54 victory over Santa Clara. And 600 of those fans left with a bonus: a bobblehead that debuted with the new-look Iggy.
The new look was inspired by LMU’s new brand identity, along with extensive historical research and creative input from students, staff, alumni, former and current Iggy. He now better represents the sense of pride in the LMU community.
Iggy the Lion embodies the ideals of courage, community, and curiosity that define the institution. Officially adopted as LMU’s mascot in 1923, Iggy’s name honors St. Ignatius of Loyola, reflecting a lineage deeply rooted in the university’s Jesuit and Marymount heritage. While rich in tradition, the story of Iggy is also interwoven with a sense of wonder and imagination that inspires reflection and pride.
In spite of speculation on the origins of the mascot – whether it links to the mountain lions that made their home on the Westchester bluff, or a connection to the famous MGM film studio lion – the truth remains a mystery.
Today, Iggy exemplifies the essence of the LMU experience as an enduring figure of pride and unity. The mascot inspires the LMU community to reach beyond themselves, fostering a culture of inclusion and collaboration. Whether energizing the crowd at athletic events, encouraging perseverance in the classroom, or championing service initiatives, Iggy models the ideals of a transformative education rooted in community and academic excellence.
Iggy’s new look was revealed during halftime of the game against Santa Clara with a video and the bobbleheads. The Lions defense then roared and clawed its way to an upset win.
