We are living in the midst of multiple political, social, and environmental crises. In such difficult times, music can provide some respite – an opportunity to appreciate beauty in the world and to find rejuvenation. The Marymount Institute for Faith, Culture, and the Arts, in collaboration with the Department of Music, is offering two musical series this fall semester for your enjoyment.
Music @ Marymount is a concert series featuring violinist Ken Aiso and pianist Valeria Morgovskaya. Concerts will take place on the first Thursday of the month, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m., in the Marymount Center (University Hall 3002): September 4th, October 2nd, November 6th, and December 4th. The first concert on September 4th features the following program:
J.S. Bach: Violin Sonata in E major BWV 1016
I Adagio
II Allegro
Paola Marquez: Etudes for Immigrants (2024)
Etude I The arrival (Wonder)
Etude II Echoes of Home (Homesick)
Sulkhan Tsintsadze: Melody
Johannes Brahms: Violin Sonata in D minor
III Un poco presto e con sentimento
IV Presto agitato
Please join us for an hour of music and community. A light reception will follow each concert.
Community Workshops for Balinese Gamelan — An Open Invitation, with Professors Paul Humphreys (emeritus) and Divine Gbagbo invites faculty, staff, and students to experience Balinese gamelan, first-hand. With instruments created in the workshop of a master instrument maker in the Gianyar region of Bali and currently on loan to the Institute from the Department of Music, these sessions are open to all members of the LMU community.
Gamelan-playing is an integral aspect of community life throughout Bali. Participation is a process through which details of rhythm, melody and form are “brought into the heart.” Inspired by this process, as well as by the beauty of the music and the instruments themselves, this evolving tradition flourishes today in schools and communities both inside and outside of Bali. LMU is fortunate to be among these.
Please join us in the celebration of music-as-community that is Balinese gamelan. There will be four sessions this fall, all on Tuesdays at 1:45 – 3:15pm: September 2, October 14, November 11, and December 2. All are welcome, but space is limited. Please RSVP.
