
Martha McCarthy, Presidential Professor of Educational Leadership in the School of Education, has been named a 2016 Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). This honor recognizes McCarthy for her notable and sustained research achievements and for “exemplifying the highest standards of educational excellence through accomplishment, professionalism and commitment.” She is one of 22 Fellows named for this year.
Martha McCarthy will also receive the 2016 AERA Division A Excellence in Research Award. Both distinctions will be bestowed during the AERA 2016 Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. On Saturday, April 9, McCarthy will be officially inducted into the 2016 class of AERA Fellows, joining 602 current Fellows named since the program’s establishment in 2007.
McCarthy joined LMU in 2011 as one of a select group of Presidential Professors that included a Nobel laureate and a Pulitzer Prize winner. Early in her career, she worked as a teacher and school administrator before joining the faculty at Indiana University, where she served as a Chancellor’s Professor and chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in the School of Education. McCarthy has served as president of the Education Law Association and the University Council for Educational Administration and as vice president for Division A (Administration) of the American Educational Research Association. She has received the Living Legend Award from the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration and the Roald Campbell Lifetime Achievement Award from the University Council for Educational Administration, among numerous awards.
In addition to being named a Fellow and receiving the Excellence in Research Award, McCarthy will be honored with the 2016 Legacy Award from the Journal of Educational Administration during the AERA 2016 Annual Meeting. This award is in recognition of McCarthy’s contribution to the field of educational leadership, and also for her contributions to the journal.
