A site-specific outdoor art installation of more than 30 artist-designed flags opens this month at Loyola Marymount University’s Laband Art Gallery. “Dream Wavers” begins with a reception from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, and runs through Sunday, May 12.
The installation features flags that showcase diverse approaches to symbols and designs, including an oversized hand, a pair of American flag trousers and a hotdog wrapped in a croissant. “Dream Wavers” will be on display outside the gallery in the George A.V. Dunning Courtyard.
“Dream Wavers” includes the work of 13 LMU students mentored by Garland Kirkpatrick, professor of graphic design, in a social design course. The students explored motifs that address their own personal notions of identity in the context of our contemporary conversations about national belonging.
Twenty-two practicing artists from across the country were also invited to participate. This portion of “Dream Wavers” was co-curated by Katie Kirk, a Los Angeles artist and LMU alumna, and Sage Dawson, a St. Louis-based curator and artist. Dawson is the founder and director of the nonprofit arts space STNDRD, which partnered with the Laband in the development of “Dream Wavers.”
“Artists from across the U.S. are examining a range of perspectives on identity, particularly in our current political and social landscape,” Dawson said. “Raising these flags is a gesture of unveiling and revealing – to critique, amend and support our present moment.”
