Loyola Marymount University today welcomed a freshman class of 1,470 students to its Westchester campus – drawing from another record-breaking pool of applicants.
Nearly 15,400 students applied for fall freshman enrollment, a 14 percent jump over last year’s 13,500 applications. LMU enrolled 1,350 freshmen in 2016.
“We are proud to welcome the Class of 2021 to the bluff,” said Maureen Weatherall, LMU’s vice provost for enrollment management. “This is a diverse, high-achieving group of students and we are excited to see the impact they will surely have during their time here.”
Members of the Class of 2021 earned an average GPA of 3.75 and come from 43 states, the District of Columbia, and 46 nations. The number of out-of-state freshmen students rose from 32 percent in 2016 to 36 percent this year.
Roughly 10 percent of this year’s freshmen are international students – also up slightly from last year – and the university experienced a 36 percent increase in international applications.
Additionally, transfer student applications were up 25 percent, and the enrolling transfer class – the largest to date with roughly 400 students – reflects an average GPA of 3.51, up from 3.41 last year.
LMU’s Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts will welcome the largest number of freshmen, followed by the College of Business Administration and Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering.
Move-in began Friday for the freshmen Lions – 94 percent of whom will live on campus – in anticipation of the start of classes this morning.
