Loyola Marymount University senior Avery Bean — and all the volunteers she can muster — will be painting walls, picking up debris and refreshing the landscaping Saturday, April 10 at Westchester High School.
“This is a big day, and a great day for Westchester High,” said Dr. Kenneth Pride, an assistant principal at Westchester. “It shows there are a lot of people who are concerned and care about our school. It’s also an opportunity for them to come together and spruce the place up and be proud.”
Bean, an LMU business major, volunteered to organize the Westchester High School Clean-Up Day after hearing that the school was looking a little worse for wear and in need of some cleaning.
Westchester High, like so many other schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, is a victim of the budget crisis that has reduced the number of custodians and money available for general maintenance.
“I went to the Westchester High School campus and spoke to a few teachers,” said Bean, “and they were really thrilled about our help.” She is hoping to get LMU students and faculty, as well as volunteers from Westchester High and neighbors to supply the elbow grease to brighten up the campus and make it a more welcoming environment.
The volunteers will be working from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those interested in participating are encouraged to register but walk-ups are also welcome.
Bean is hoping this clean-up day will turn into a major community event. Local businesses are also responding. Tower Pizza has agreed to co-sponsor the event.
