The LMU School of Education celebrates its fourth consecutive CASE District VII Award of Excellence for its 2017 Impact Report – Elevating Education: Innovation and Impact in Communities. The publication has been honored with the Bronze award in the category of Institutional Relations Publications: President’s Reports and Annual Reports on behalf of the CASE District VII Board of Directors and the CASE VII Awards of Excellence Committee.
The impact report has been distinguished as one of the top annual reports amongst universities and institutions in the western region of the United States (Arizona, California, Guam, Hawaii, Nevada, Northern Mariana Islands, and Utah).
The report is developed by the SOE Communications team: Sheila Rodriguez, Manager of Communications; Jordan Gadd, Director of Strategic Planning and Engagement; Dan Gordon, Writer and Editor; and Steve Williams, Designer.
“Our SOE communications team does an extraordinary job of sharing the stories and outstanding achievements of SOE students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners,” said School of Education Dean Shane P. Martin. “We are honored to receive recognition year after year for our signature publication from CASE District VII.”

As the 2017-2018 academic year marks its 25th anniversary, the SOE celebrates its rich history and legacy – and looks ahead to its bright future – with a special edition of the 2017 Impact Report, which now includes a new dashboard format online.
The 2017 Impact Report spotlights the strong connections that the SOE faculty and staff have built in the field of education, and major grants awarded to the SOE as a result of the leadership and collaborative efforts of the SOE faculty, staff and partners.
These accomplishments allow the SOE to reach across the traditional divides and bring together stakeholders to produce changes that our schools need and our children deserve. The Impact Report illustrates the SOE and University’s mission to encourage lifelong learning and academic excellence, educate the whole person and promote service, cultural responsiveness and justice for all – all through partnerships that bring people together in dialogue and action.
Children are always at the center of the SOE’s work, and the children shown in the report – climbing the book staircase, holding balloons, balancing on books, etc. – are those who the SOE serves in the community through partnerships with local schools and community organizations. The educator pictured at the top of the book staircase on the cover is also an alumna of the SOE – Ana Ponce Ed.D ‘13 – who is the CEO of Camino Nuevo Charter Academy and named one of the top seven most powerful educators in the world by Forbes magazine. The design of the report signifies that the SOE is a learning community committed to elevating its work in education while also preparing the next generation of leaders for young learners, schools and the common good of society.
“The 2017 Impact Report celebrates our achievements in the last year, but it also reflects our unwavering commitment to elevating education and meeting the needs of the communities we serve – a commitment that has been prevalent since the beginning,” says Shane P. Martin, SOE dean. “For the next 25 years and beyond, our outstanding faculty, staff, students, alumni and community partners will continue to seek new ways to ensure that all children receive the quality educational experience they deserve.”
Highlights from our 2017 Impact Report include:
- In U.S. News & World Report’s latest “Best Graduate Schools” listing, LMU ranked 62nd out of approximately 1,500 schools, colleges and departments of education nationwide, and among the top three Jesuit institutions nationally.
- The SOE Center for Equity for English Learners, the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Sobrato Family Foundation are working to improve outcomes for young English Learners through its 5-year partnership, funded by a $2.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education – the largest grant in SOE history.
- In addition, SOE’s Center for Undergraduate Teacher Preparation received a $250,000 grant from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to increase the pipeline of undergraduate students entering the profession – a strategy that addresses the state’s teacher shortage.
- LMU’s Upward Bound Program has also received a $1.2 million U.S. Department of Education grant to continue the program for the next five years.
- Our faculty and students continue to be active globally in Summer 2017. Students in “Comparative Education: USA and Philippines,” a course in the Department of Specialized Programs in Urban Education taught by Edmundo Litton, spent two weeks in late June and early July studying in Manila, Philippines. In July, SOE professors Fernando Estrada and William Parham led 14 students in SOE’s Counseling Program on a summer study abroad program in Guanajuato, Mexico. The 10-day curriculum focused on multiculturalism in counseling and education.
- The SOE and university’s education unit secured nearly $7.7 million in sponsored research and contracts – a 14.5% increase from last year.
CASE is an international association serving educational institutions and the advancement professionals who work on their behalf in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and related areas. The awards will be officially presented during the district’s annual conference March 1-3 in San Francisco this year.
