LMU School of Education is a proud partner of Beyond100K, a network of organizations focused on ending the STEM teacher shortage with equity and belonging. LMU was one of the founding partners of the coalition, which originally formed following President Obama’s call for the nation to prioritize STEM education in 2011.
The organization, titled 100Kin10 at the time, had the goal of preparing 100,000 new STEM teachers by 2021. LMU School of Education played a lead role as one of the over 300 organizations who joined the partnership, and together the alliance surpassed its goal and brought 108,000 STEM teachers to America’s classrooms by 2021.
While President Obama’s goal has been met, the network continues to have a great impact on the future of STEM education. 100Kin10 is now Beyond100K and has a new target to bring 150,000 new, diverse STEM educators to the classroom by 2032. The partnership aims to create lasting change in STEM education, especially for schools serving majority Black, Latinx and Native American students.
Through its partnership with Beyond100K, LMU School of Education is dedicated to supporting the future pipelines of STEM educators of color in schools. Preparing and retaining BIPOC teachers and leaders is crucial, as research shows educators of color provide a sense of belonging that lead to better outcomes for their students’ futures.
By focusing on the inclusion of BIPOC teachers, Beyond100K seeks to create a more welcoming environment for students of whose backgrounds have been traditionally excluded from STEM opportunities. LMU School of Education is proud to continue supporting the coalition’s mission to create the conditions for all students to thrive in STEM learning.
