LMU Magazine, the official publication of Loyola Marymount University, was honored with a first-place prize at the National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Awards hosted by the Los Angeles Press Club on Dec. 2.
Writer Robert Jackson, an LMU alumnus, received the award in the best TV/Movie feature category for his article, “Hollywood Caste,” from the winter 2017 issue of the magazine. He explored how segregationist attitudes were brought to early Hollywood by migrants from the U.S. South and reflected in the film industry.
“This is an important article about race, justice and ethics in a city that LMU Magazine, LMU and the university’s alumni are deeply rooted in,” said Joseph Wakelee-Lynch, the magazine’s editor. “I’m proud that the L.A. journalism community recognized the quality of Robert Jackson’s work and our magazine’s ability to meet the same high professional standards that are held by every serious media outlet in Los Angeles.”
LMU Magazine is among the nation’s most-lauded university publications. Since its relaunch in 2010, the magazine has earned more than 45 awards in design, photography, illustration and writing. Its quality has been recognized by Graphis, the Society of Publication Designers, Communication Arts magazine, University and College Designers Association, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.
Additionally, a video by The Hollywood Reporter shot partly at LMU was also honored at the awards. The video covered the Women in Entertainment mentorship program, in which high school girls are paired with leading women in the entertainment industry. In partnership with the School of Film and Television, several of those students are offered full scholarships to LMU each year.
