Loyola Marymount University leaders are among those named in the “LA 500,” the Los Angeles Business Journal’s 2020 list of the city’s most influential people.
For the fifth time, LMU President Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D., has been selected for the annual list of visionaries who are shaping the future of Los Angeles. Under Snyder’s leadership, LMU hosted the sixth Democratic presidential debate, and placed among the top six private colleges in California on U.S. News & World Report’s list of top national universities, the LABJ notes. LMU “is an increasingly popular target for college applicants; the school received more than 18,500 applications for the class of 2023 and admitted a record-low 44 percent of them.”
LMU College of Business Administration Dean Dayle M. Smith, Ph.D., makes her debut on the 2020 list, earning recognition for the college’s top-ranked entrepreneurship program, its commitment to the United Nations’ sustainable development goals, and her appointment to the board of directors of the International Association of Jesuit Business Schools.
Paul S. Viviano, chair of LMU’s Board of Trustees, is honored for the fifth time in the LA 500’s health care category. Viviano is the president and chief executive officer of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. He has served on LMU’s Board of Trustees since 2010 and assumed the role of chair in 2016. He is a former member of the university’s Board of Regents.
Also named to the 2020 LA 500 are members of the LMU Board of Trustees, including William Ahmanson, president of The Ahmanson Foundation; Mitchell Butier ’93, chairman, president and CEO of Avery Dennison Corp.; and Maria Salinas ’87, immediate past chair of the LMU Board of Regents and president and CEO of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce.
The LA 500 includes civic leaders and key players across a range of industries, including arts and philanthropy, banks, construction and architecture, education, finance, health care, law, manufacturing and retail, media and entertainment, professional services, real estate, sports and gaming and technology.
“This year’s collection of the leading figures from the city’s business community highlights the work that took place and the progress that was made in the months before COVID-19,” the LABJ states, “but it also serves as a reminder that L.A. is peopled by some of the smartest, most innovative and staunchly resilient business talent anywhere in the world.
“In that context, this year’s LA 500 shines a light on many of the figures who not only can help us navigate the crisis today but stand to help us find our way through to the other side of this situation.”
