An interactive, traveling multimedia exhibit designed to break down barriers in education for people with disabilities was on display February 8 – 10 at Loyola Marymount University.
“Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit” consists of 10 stations that promote awareness of disabilities and encourage respect for people with disabilities through the use of photo displays, computer surveys, videos and other media. The stations cover uncomfortable questions that might arise about how to respond to individuals with disabilities, along with the history of the disability rights movement in the United States, celebrities living with disabilities, universal design principles, and how to avoid labels. The exhibit was hosted by the Loyola Marymount University School of Education, in alignment with the school’s yearlong theme of inclusive education.
Developed by graduate students at Saint Louis University, “Allies for Inclusion” debuted in 2010 in commemoration of the 20-year signing of the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act, and has been presented at more than a dozen colleges and universities. LMU recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of the ADA with a Global Summit on the Education of Individuals with Disabilities that was convened by the LMU School of Education and The Education Success Project, and chaired by the Honorable Anthony Coelho ’64, former Congressman and the primary author and sponsor of the legislation.
