The Archdiocese of Los Angeles, in partnership with Loyola Marymount University and Sprint, will present the annual Catholic Communication Collaboration Technology Conference from August 9-11 on LMU’s Westchester campus.
The event will feature more than 100 workshops offering training and education about using technology and new media at churches, schools and ministries within the archdiocese. It brings together school and parish staff members and volunteers, clergy, women religious, business managers, catechists, youth ministers and evangelizers.
The C3 Technology Conference will kick off on Thursday with a workshop by keynote speaker Wilson J. Tang, an expert in digital entertainment and video games, and founder and chief executive officer of Yumebau Inc., a game designer that uses augmented reality and virtual reality technologies.
On Friday, Innovation Day, participants will join new technology workshops and view an interactive robotic exhibition. A Sprint robot named Pepper will engage with guests, including LMU President Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D., and LMU First Lady Carol Costello.
The conference will end Saturday with a 4 p.m. Mass celebrated by Archbishop José H. Gomez in LMU’s Sacred Heart Chapel. Father Brendan McGuire, pastor of Holy Spirit Parish and School and Vicar General of Special Projects for the Diocese of San Jose, will be the homilist.
The conference will include 10 Spanish-language presentations and workshops covering a broad range of topics – from computer basics for the classroom and coding to the incorporation of social media into parish and campus ministries.
The archdiocese, in partnership with Sprint, launched C3 in 2010 as a pilot project at 25 parishes and schools. The goal was to explore and implement innovative uses of technology, including 1-to-1 student devices, training and professional development, digital content and curriculum, and an online GED program for adult learners. The summer training C3 Technology Conference for schools and parishes began in 2012.
