Nearly 1,000 Loyola Marymount University students, faculty and staff welcomed the new school year Tuesday and celebrated the school’s centennial by forming a colorful human ‘100’ on a lawn at the historic campus.
The picture-perfect celebration at the 100-year-old university was recorded at 1 p.m. on the university’s Sunken Garden lawn with Sacred Heart Chapel in the background.
The program made the most of the first convo hour of the year, when no classes are scheduled and students are free to assemble in the noon hour to hear short programs, attend the on-campus farmers market or check out campus clubs.
To mark the centennial and form the “100,’” the participants donned shirts of crimson, white and navy – LMU’s colors – and created a message about LMU’s birthday that could be viewed and photographed from the air and surrounding rooftops. They also “planked” to create a more contemporary version of the mosaic while rocking to disco.
There were plenty of singing and hugs among returning classmates who hadn’t seen each other since the spring, as well as 100-year birthday cake and tricolor cupcakes for all. Iggy the Lion mascot joined in to pump up the crowd.
